August 25th 1914

Entrained at Chatham at 4.30. Heard we were going to Thurso to join Fleet. Special train the whole way. Nice journey. Stopped at Rugby Carlisle Stirling, Perth and several wayside stations.

Ed. Note:  We can’t find any record of Thurso being a staging port for the RN. If anyone has information on that, please comment. Thanks!

  1. It seems likely that their destination was Scrabster, which was a small settlement with a harbour on Thurso Bay. My guess is that they would leave there to sail to Scapa. In present tiomes, there is a ferry to Orkney from Scrabster.

    • That makes sense. I just noticed that these old photo captures are out of focus. The latter part was scanned. I’ll have to go back and re-scan the whole diary, I think. Thanks for commenting.
