Closed up all day expecting to meet the enemy at any moment. Heard they were bombarding Hartlepool, Scarborough and Whitney. Mist sprang up just at the critical time when we should have met them which enabled them to slip past us an escape all action. All very fed up.

16th December 1914 (#2)

Turned out at 2.15 a.m. In nets and boats and off to sea by 5.15.a.m. Expected to go into action a 7.0 a.m. on 16th. Got no extra sleep but everyone in the best of spirits.

15th December 1914

Usual routine. Awning spread on after deck. Went ashore in afternoon and played football for the seamen vs. marines. Won 2-1. 

14th December 1914

Usual routine. Painted ships side in forenoon. Very cold & windy. Make and mend in afternoon.

12th December 1914

Note: No post for the 13th. Next post is 14th December.

Usual routine.  4″ gun drill in forenoon. Painted screens etc.

11th December 1914

3 German Cruisers sunk off Falkland Islands by “Indomitable” “Inflexible” etc. 4″ gun drill in forenoon. Make and mend in afternoon. 

10th December 1914

Quiet day. Took in 13.5″ shrapnel and sent out A.P. Lyddite in exchange.

9th December 1914

Cleaned paint work all day. Nothing doing. 

8th December 1914

Coaled ship 300 tons. Cleaned ship afterwards. 

7th December 1914

Usual Sunday routine. Church in forenoon. Went ashore in afternoon & had a game of football. One chap broke his ankle. Very cold while waiting to come off in picket boat. Nearly unshipped gangway when coming alongside.
