Took in 4″ lyddite during forenoon. Running hard. Put to sea at 2.0. pm. Nothing doing so returned at 7.30. p.m. German Cruisers attacked ‘Halcyon” at Yarmouth but soon retreated doing no damage.
Turned out at 6.40. Nothing doing in Zepp. line. First part landed. Pay day. Served out with Harry Foremen’s (Freeman’s?) fags & baccy.
Ed. Note: First part landed could be ‘first party landed’. Freeman or Foreman is definitely a capital F at the start. Next to that might be an r but it does not look like the r’s above it in the text. Next to that could be an n or two ee’s.
First part of both watches went for march ashore. Usual routine.
Fine day. Cleaned ship in forenoon. Night defence sounded off about 11.45. Submarine reported in harbour. Great excitement. Sighted periscope about 12.20 going about 12 knots. “Queen Mary” opened fire with Maxim. We opened fire with 4″ lydite and common. Sunk her after a little while. Some of our shot richoceted (sic) on shore & did slight damage. Small kid hurt. (This was reported not to be a submarine, but no explanation was given as to what it was).
Arrived Invergordon between 5 and 6 a.m. Coaled from Ethel Sunean (?) 1340 tons. Finished at 2.0.p.m. Raining hard and very cold. Washed down in afternoon.
