Weather still choppy. Church in forenoon. Pipe down in afternoon. Went to service in Evening in tailor’s shop.

Turned out at 3:15 A.M. In boats, wets and up anchor. Got under way at 4:45. Running & blowing hard. Spent
forenoon in after transmitting station at searchlight drill. Told of for S.1 trainer (night defence).

Coaled ship 1300 tons. Arrived Scapa 5:30 A.M. About 50 Marines joined ship. Also Foot (?) (from Canada) joined our mess.

September 28th – 29th 1914

Very hard gale. Topmast carried away during night and and port 3 pdr. was had overboard and both calcium buoys. Plenty of
water found its way into lower decks. Cleaned up the flats in forenoon and when finished got head down. Supposed to have been on
the way to bombard Borkum.

Very rough night heavy gale sprang up. Had 1st Watch. Shipped several seas. Had church in forenoon. Still very rough. Went to evening service. Sea & wind got heavier as night approached. Had all night in as Red Watch were not relieved.

Hands called at 2.50 a.m. Raining blowing hard and very cold miserable getting in nets. Finger very painful. Put out to sea about 4.30 a.m. Broke into usual sea routine. Chaplain dished out socks and mufflers to Volunteers.

Usual harbour routine. Took in 13.5 shrapnel. Heard buzz of bombardment of coast.

Squashed finger in 4 in ammunition hoist. Arrive Scapa Flow about 7:30 A.M. Coaled ship 1000 tons. Weather warmer. Told off for provisioning.
