Chipping paintwork all day. “Dreadnought” left basin after 10 weeks stay. Rained hard in afternoon and evening. First rain since we came in basin.

Cleaning down under fore-top. Slipped when coming from bos’uns chair to ladder leading to foretop. Lost hold and went clean over direction tower rails, catching nose and eye on the way. Went from there to foremost funnel and bounced from funnel to lower yard which I managed to hang onto somehow or other. Very close shave as it was a non-stop run from yard to deck of about 60 feet. Had face dished up. Had 3 stitches put in it. On Sick List.

King’s Inspection. Paraded on ground about 9.30. All the other ships there when we arrived. Huge muster. King arrived and gave speech which none of us could hear. Marched passed King afterwards. (“Lion” in single file). Had to wait in dockyard until he had finished going over ships. King lunched on board “Lion” with Admiral. Manned ship after dinner and cheered King as
he left. Pipe down afterwards. Admiral made K.C.V.D. (?)

1.0.A.M. Took some of the bodies on after deck and some outside
Police Office. Whole of D. O’s flat converted temporary mortuary.
Had to keep on guns until 3.30 AM when we started on turret again.
Worse than yesterday as bodies were rigid and so not so easy to
move about. Went down into working chamber on my own to
investigate. Rather ghastly job as only has electric torch & dead
bodies all around. Foremost crews relieved us about 6.0.A.M. Kept
at guns till about 4.0.pm. when we secured. Buried dead from after
deck in evening. Very impressive service. Buried 103 bodies. Had a
night watch as Special Parties were told off and so had all night
in. Very glad to turn in as felt we needed it. Did not get much
sleep though. Passed bows of warship sticking out of water about
noon but can’t say whether it was British or German.
