Scrubbed decks. Worked cable on foc’sle. Ship in proper pot mess. Very cold day. Leave for 1st part of Starboard from 1.30.p.m to 7.a.m. Boatkeeper of pinnace. Took twenty men ashore, and got head down in afternoon.

The 1st and 2nd part of the watch; the ships company was organised into 2 watches, port & starboard. Big ships above a cruiser were in turn further sub-divided into parts, the 1st & 2nd. So we have Port 1 and Port 2 and Starboard 1 and starboard 2.
Each Part wend on to be further halved again into the 1st to 4th sub-division.
