Exercise Action in forenoon and then cleaned outside of pinnace. Went ashore in afternoon and watch Rugby Match. “Lion” v “Nottingham” (Draw 2 tries each). Night defence at 6.30. White Watch forward. Burnt Searchlights. Slung clean hammocks.

Cleaning down screens all forenoon. Not quite so cold. Landed with 2nd part of starboard in afternoon. Marched as far as football field and then turned loose to graze for about an hour. Running nearly the whole time and so on the whole a very exciting afternoon. Finished up at canteen.

Hands called at 4.30.a.m. 2nd part of starboard worked main derrick. Very cold day. Blowing & snowing. Started coaling about 6.0. A.M. Took in 340 tons from Agnes Duncan. Finished about 8.0 AM. Hands bathed in breakfast hour. Cleaned ship in forenoon and piped down in afternoon. Got head to bear. Duty part.

Saturday Routine. Holy stoned decks. Prepared for Sea in forenoon. Got under way about 12 o’clock (noon). Head down in afternoon. On way back, coaling on arrival. No night defence. Arrived Rosyth about 8.16. Quite a blizzard on when we arrived. Hands cleaned into Coaling Rig before arrival. Picking up rope carried away when ship was being hauled up to it. Very difficult job seeing another. Went out with four hands in picket boat to reeve 4 4 1/2″ hauser through buoy. Duty had football gear on and got soaked & chilled through. Took us about 1/2 hour to get it on. Could not bring ship up where had it reevedand about 12 o’clock hands turned in leaving coaling until tomorrow. Finally got ship secured about 1.0.A.M. 2nd picket boat had collision with tug and Ivan Lovell broke his leg.
