Very cold day. Red leaded waterways on fore mess deck in forenoon. Part of ship in afternoon. Told off with 2 hands from each part, about 3.15 pm, to make net for picket boat to drag for floating mine which had broken loose from Harbour defence and was drifting down with the tide towards the ships. It was however picked up outside the bridge by the “Ostrich” before we had got the net down to the boat. Duty part.

Arrived Rosyth about 3.0 AM. Hands called at 4.15. Very cold morning. Started coaling about 6.30. Took in 540 tons from Agnes Duncan. Finished at 8.0 AM. Cleaned ship in forenoon. Make & mend in afternoon. Got head down. Heard buzz that we had missed the German Fleet by 2 hours, also that Captain Fountaine was coming back to ship.

Got all boats out before breakfast. Rig of day “Duck Suits” for evaluations. Under short notice so washed out evaluations. got ready for sea after divisions. Put out to sea about 12.30. Big swell on again. Sick once more. Had 1st Watch. Seemed very long watch.

Raining all day. Cleaned paintwork under fore shelter deck in forenoon. Paid during dinner hour. Told off to cut rope for munition factory in
afternoon. Finished by (? part of page missing) and so good numbers. Buzz about going out but nothing doing.

Had Middle Watch. About the worst watch I’ve had since joining up. Could not get away from wind and felt chilled through. Very glad when Buxton
came up to relieve me at 4.0 A.M. Cleaned into coaling rig 1st thing. Saw Gooch on Boom defence ship as we were coming in. Arrived Rosyth about
9.30. Started coaling about 10.45. Took in 970 tons from Agnes Duncan. Good coaling. Finished about 2.0 p.m. Cleaned ship by 4.0 p.m.
