Scrubbed decks. Carred on with 1st Lieutenant’s party. Got 2 more torpedoes out. Cleaned paintwork in submerged flat in afternoon. 3rd Sub (?), duty Sub (or book?). Very windy night and so 2nd part of Starboard Watch told off for anchor watches. Told off from 2.am to
4.am. Had to sleep under fore shelter deck starboard side. Very rotten as cements bags were on the deck and wind was blowing in (it?) all about.

Coaling finished (thank goodness). Scrubbed decks with sand. Fell out for cook & helped Bill Pacy clean up. Told off for Hospital Party to take Midshipmen Turner to Hospital. Left ship at 12.30.pm. Finished by 1 o’clock. 3 Volunteers and two others in Party. Went to Navy House, South Queens ferry. Had yarn with “swatties” there and as much beer as we wanted. Went with Selous and had tea in village. Went back to Navy House afterwards and had sing-song with “swatties”. Returned quite sober (more than 3 of our party could say). Left shore at 6.30.

Ship full of visiting officers. “Assistance” came alongside and started working on upper deck immediately. Nothing doing all forenoon. Told off for diving party in afternoon. Attached bottom line. Carried on again in last dog down in diving boat. Large hole after enough to
hide two vivers. One armoured plate missing altogether and another buckled in. Discovered my kit-bag had been stowed in Body-room. Large hole burnt in side all all (ed. ‘and all’) gear saturated with salt water. Strong buzz about leave.

Arrived outside Forth Bridge in first watch. Has all night in. Very misty. Scrubbed dekcs. Salvage tugs alongside. Towed under bridge about 10 o’clock. Great reception by swatties* and other ships. Getting in cable for the rest of forenoon. Down in mess deck in afternoon.
*While we are fairly sure that the word is ‘swatties’, we’d love to know what it means. Let us know, if you know. Thanks!
